Sometimes, Google Chrome comes up with “ERR_CONNECTION_ABORTED” error with an explanatory message saying that the website can’t be reached, as it might be unavailable or moved to a new web address.
However, in many cases this problem ends being due to the website disabling support for SSLv3 protocol (less secure) and requiring a minimum of TSL1.1 or TSL1.2 security.
Apart from this, the problem of Google Chrome coming out with Err_Connection_Aborted Error can also be caused due to incompatible browser extensions, corrupted system files and other reasons.
Err_Connection_Aborted Error in Chrome Browser
If you are dealing with Err_Connection_Aborted error in Chrome while trying to open a webpage, you should be able to fix the problem using the following steps.
1. Disable SSLv3 in Chrome Browser
Since the most common reason for this problem is due to websites not allowing SSLV3 Protocol, you need to disable SSLV3 in your web browser and force Chrome browser to use TLS1.0 protocol.
1. Right-click on Google Chrome icon in the Taskbar and click on Properties.
2. In the Target field, add a space after chrome.exe” and type –ssl-version-min=tls1
3. Click on OK to confirm this change.
After disabling SSLv3, power OFF your modem/router, wait for 60 seconds and power it back ON again.
2. Check System Files
Sometimes, the problem is due to System files being damaged or corrupted.
1. Click on Start button and type CMD in Search bar > right-click on Command Prompt in the search results and select Run as Administrator option.
2. When prompted, enter your Admin Password to open Command Prompt with admin previlages.
3. On the Command Prompt window, type sfc /scannow and hit the enter key
Wait for Windows to scan your computer for errors and restart your computer once this process is completed.
3. Reset Chrome Browser
Err_Connection_Aborted Error can also be caused by changes in browser settings. This can be fixed by resetting Google Chrome to its default settings.
1. Open Google Chrome > click on 3-dots icon and select Settings in the drop-down menu.
Note: If you cannot open the browser, open Chrome in Incognito Mode.
2. On the Settings screen, select Reset Settings in the left-pane. In the right-pane, click on Restore Settings to their original defaults option.
3. On the confirmation pop-up, click on Reset Settings button to confirm.
Note: The Reset process does not clear your bookmarks, passwords and browsing history.
4. Temporarily Disable Antivirus Program
The method to disable antivirus protection varies, depending on the third party antivirus program installed on your computer.
If you are using Norton Antivirus, open System Tray > right-click on the Program icon and select Disable Auto Protect option.
On the next screen, select the time period up to which you want to disable Antivirus program on your computer and click on OK.
Note: Make sure that you choose the lowest amount of time (15 minutes) to disable the Antivirus program on your computer.
After disabling Antivirus, try to open the webpage and see if you are still getting the same error message.
5. Uninstall KB2992611 Update
If you have upgraded your computer to Windows 10 or Windows 11 from an earlier version, the problem can be fixed by removing KB2992611 update from the computer.
Windows 11: Click on Start button > Settings Icon > select Windows Update in the left-pane. In the right-pane, click on Update History.
On Update History screen, scroll down to Related Settings section and click on Uninstall Updates option.
On the next screen, see if you can locate KB2992611 Update and Uninstall this update.
Windows 10. Open Settings > Go to Updates & Security > select Windows update in the left-pane and click on View Installed Update History in the right pane.
On the next screen, click on Uninstall Updates link.
